"There’s no diploma in the world that declares you as an artist—it’s not like becoming a doctor. You can declare yourself an artist and then figure out how to be an artist." —Kara Walker
In a new episode from the ART21 Exclusive series, artist Kara Walker reflects on her early success and offers advice to the next generation of artists, shown again recent work at Sikkema Jenkins & Co. and the 2014 Frieze Art Fair.
almost all of the criticism i get is in regards to how my work has changed. i get told my new work feels lazy and everyone wishes i still made pictures like these. to be honest, i do too. if i knew how to take photos like this anymore i would. because i love this work. but i don’t know how to do it anymore. i don’t know who these people are. i don’t know who i was when i shot these. i don’t see the world this way anymore. it makes me really sad kind of because i feel like i’ve lost a point of view or something but i’m hoping it will re-surface in a different way. ok? thank you.
